Gallery Belle will host local-foods dinner for Finger Lakes CleanWaters Initiative

Unpolluted lakes, rivers, tributaries, and groundwater are the "guests of honor" at a pop-up dinner being held this Sunday in a converted church building in Hector. The dinner will feature local foods donated by several area farms, and proceeds will benefit the Finger Lakes CleanWaters Initiative.

Southwest flair in rustic surroundings at East Hill's Agava Restaurant

We always love welcoming an ambitious new restaurant to the Ithaca area, and this week the 14850 Dining Report is on east hill visiting the new Agava Restaurant. This new "southwest-inspired" eatery in the former home of Coyote Loco and Olivia is just a couple of months old, but has already won a loyal following with wood-fired-oven flatbreads, fish and seafood, tacos and burgers, with lots of fresh local ingredients all around.

Fine dining with a casual attitude at west end's Fine Line Bistro

This week we're in Ithaca's west end visiting Fine Line Bistro. This restaurant has been on West State Street for several years now, and it's one of the reasons this neighborhood has been growing stronger and more prominent, with Gimme! Coffee, Felicia's Atomic Lounge, The Westy, and Studio West joining neighborhood stalwarts like MasterCraft Custom Framing & Fine Arts and the State Diner.

This week we're looking at the variety of food trucks popping up around the Ithaca area lately. There are a couple of favorites that have been here for decades -- Johnny's Hot Truck and Louie's Lunch are legendary -- but they've been joined more recently by a taco truck, hot dog stands, and now an Italian and grill truck that's open for breakfast, lunch, and even late-night weekend eats.

Annual Taste of the Nation affair brings Ithaca food and foodies together for a cause

With just a few weeks until the big night, 14850 Dining is getting ready for the upcoming Taste of the Nation event. This annual benefit gathers dozens of the Ithaca area's restaurants, chefs, wineries, breweries, and other beverage producers, and even musicians for a gala night aimed at ending childhood hunger. Benefiting directly are several local non-profit organizations.

The Carriage House Cafe offers a great brunch and lunch in lower Collegetown

As summer approaches and the student population wanes, 14850 Dining finds it easier to get a table at the Carriage House Cafe in Collegetown. This beautifully restored 1850s building on Stewart Avenue is open for brunch and lunch every day but Monday, and is one of the most locavore-focused eateries in town.

Dessert that's good for you at Ithaca's Smart Yogurt

Ready for a sweet idea? This week, 14850 Dining is in Ithaca's southwest visiting Smart Yogurt, just opened this spring on Route 13. It's a brightly colored shop with plenty of seating.

This self-serve frozen yogurt shop focuses on just one thing, that creamy dessert concoction, but they really go all out. Choose from ten different yogurt flavors, then add any of the dozens and dozens of toppings -- or all of them.

Hal's Deli continues a Downtown Ithaca tradition

Serving Ithaca for over fifty years now, Hal's Deli has offered inexpensive breakfasts and overstuffed sandwiches to countless generations of students and locals. Hal Kuntz, the original proprietor, passed away years ago, but his memory lives on in the tasty food, and his wife, Sandy, still presides most mornings.

Burger King to adopt locavore philosophy and commit to local beef

The Burger King Corporation today announced an ambitious plan to adopt a locavore philosophy, beginning with a commitment to use local sources of beef across the United States. The plan, already being test-marketed in Central New York, will eventually involve sourcing beef from farms within 100 miles of every Burger King franchise.
