151 North Street
Dryden, NY 13053
Phone: 607-844-4466

We're sorry to report that A-1 Pizzeria and Steakhouse in Dryden closed in October 2014. A-1 was a long-standing family restaurant near the intersection of Routes 13 and 38 in Dryden for over thirty years, and it had expanded several times. They served pizza and Italian dishes, steaks and chicken, and some Greek fare, as well as a good diner-style breakfast.

Ithaca, NY 14850

Taking over from Bru Dogs is this new semi-permanent food truck outside Jason's, offering a simple menu of hot dogs and handmade potato chips from lunch through late night. Go for a chili cheese dog, or share "chips on a stick," a spiral-cut potato that's fried while you wait.

Blue Stone Bar & Grill

110 North Aurora Street
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-272-2371

This beautifully furnished and serenely lit little eatery has dining inside or on the sidewalk, a gorgeous granite bar, and pieces from local artist Warren Bunn on the walls to set the mood. There's a variety of sandwiches and burgers, salads and entrees, and appetizers and desserts, with many appetizers and a few entrees landing in the vegetarian column. The food's all pretty good but a bit pricey, and doesn't always match what you think you ordered.

This new lunch-and-late-night hot dog cart in front of Jason's in Collegetown started out by swooping in nightly (Tuesday through Saturday) at about 9 and staying until the wee hours, offering the perfect handheld food: hot dogs or sausage and peppers. They're now trying out weekday lunchtime hours, Tuesday through Friday.

C. T. Bento

335 Elmira Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-277-7017

Just recently opened in Ithaca's southwest, in the former home of Smart Monkey Cafe, C. T. Bento offers a variety of Japanese food to dine in or take out. There's a focus on bento boxes, the original happy meal, plus rice bowls, appetizers, sushi, and an assortment of teas. Everything we've tried has been fresh, tasty, well prepared, and attractively served, and we're intrigued by some of the tea options. The place isn't quite organized yet, but we'll do a proper review after they've had a chance to settle in.

New from the folks who brought us Xeo's Cafe and Mexeo is Cafeo, a tiny cafe in Collegetown that's strongly reminiscent of a sidewalk cafe in Paris, with a counter and a few stools, a few chairs outside, and top-notch coffee. There's brewed coffee if you just need a cup of joe and don't want to wait, but if you've got a few minutes, go the brewed-to-order pour-over route for the freshest possible cup of your choice. Of course you can have the usual espresso drinks, like a well-made cappuccino or latte, but first try the Vietnamese espresso, made hot or iced with sweetened condensed milk.

Culture Shock

109 South Cayuga Street
NY 14850

We're hearing great things about this fun downtown eatery that focuses on healthy foods, especially foods with live cultures such as yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha, a non-alcoholic carbonated drink. They've got lots of fresh entree salads, and a selection of tea. The ball pit is kids-only before 8pm, and adults-only after, so stop in and play. We'll visit soon.

Kyushu

2300 North Triphammer Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-257-6788

A Japanese hibachi restaurant and sushi bar in the Tops/Applebee's plaza on North Triphammer Road in front of the Shops at Ithaca Mall, Kyushu offers hibachi-style dishes (cooked table-side), fresh sushi, and a variety of other Japanese meals. Hibachi is as much a show as a meal; well-trained chefs, practically culinary acrobats, create stir-fry on a large, table-side grill. The food is delicious, well prepared, and surprisingly affordable; complete lunches cost $6-9, and complete dinners $12 and up.

Lucatelli's Ristorante

205 Elmira Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-273-0777

Lucatelli’s is best known for its plentiful Italian-style entrees. It’s also best known for its juicy steaks. And, it’s best known for its extensive antipasto salad bar. The food’s tasty, the parking’s easy, the pasta and gnocchi are fresh, and if you haven’t been here in a while, what are you waiting for? Lucatelli's has a surprisingly good bourbon selection -- important to this bourbon afficionado. The shrimp cocktail features four large, juicy shrimp and deliciously sharp cocktail sauce, and the "side" of pasta (ordered a la carte with most entrees) looks like a meal in itself.

Mama Teresa's Pizzeria

139 Dryden Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-272-6262

Mama Teresa's has adequate pizza with interesting combinations, and good dishes such as chicken or eggplant parm. Their regular pizza doesn't really have enough sauce, but the sauceless veggie pizza has a nice array of vegetable toppings. Try $1.50 slices after 10pm on Monday through Wednesday nights or $5 lunch specials. Of course, the best pizza comes straight of the oven, not out from under a heat lamp, so order a whole one when you can. Free delivery.

Sushi O Sake

Closed. One of Ithaca's best and most consistently good Japanese restaurants, this downtown eatery offers fresh and expertly prepared sushi, creative appetizers, and a wide variety of entrees featuring fish, seafood, chicken, vegetables, and noodle dishes. Their original sushi menu matches that of their sister eatery, Plum Tree, in Collegetown. There's an extensive sake list, with some excellent chilled sakes. It's easy to spend a lot of money at dinnertime, but there are lots of affordable options at lunchtime.

The Gates, which opened in October 2012 as a bar and music venue, has just launched a full dinner menu after dabbling with food off and on. It's a pub menu with a heavily locavore bent, which means pulled pork made from Piggery pork shoulders, 100% beef hot dogs made naturally from NYS beef, veggie burgers made in house, and even bleu cheese dressing made from Lively Run bleu cheese.
