A-1 is a long-standing family restaurant near the intersection of Routes 13 and 38 in Dryden, and a glance will show it's expanded several times. They serve pizza and Italian dishes, steaks and chicken, and some Greek fare, as well as a good diner-style breakfast.

Joe's Restaurant

602 West Buffalo Street
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-256-3463

This old favorite in Ithaca's west end reopened several years ago to great fanfare and high expectations. Despite a shaky start, Joe's has settled down and provides good Italian-American fare. Specials in the bar, such as a pizza and a pint, make it more affordable than a full dinner can be.

Lucatelli's Ristorante

205 Elmira Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-273-0777

Lucatelli’s is best known for its plentiful Italian-style entrees. It’s also best known for its juicy steaks. And, it’s best known for its extensive antipasto salad bar. The food’s tasty, the parking’s easy, the pasta and gnocchi are fresh, and if you haven’t been here in a while, what are you waiting for? Lucatelli's has a surprisingly good bourbon selection -- important to this bourbon afficionado. The shrimp cocktail features four large, juicy shrimp and deliciously sharp cocktail sauce, and the "side" of pasta (ordered a la carte with most entrees) looks like a meal in itself.

Mama Teresa's Pizzeria

139 Dryden Road
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-272-6262

Mama Teresa's has adequate pizza with interesting combinations, and good dishes such as chicken or eggplant parm. Their regular pizza doesn't really have enough sauce, but the sauceless veggie pizza has a nice array of vegetable toppings. Try $1.50 slices after 10pm on Monday through Wednesday nights or $5 lunch specials. Of course, the best pizza comes straight of the oven, not out from under a heat lamp, so order a whole one when you can. Free delivery.

Napoli Pizzeria

401 East State Street
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-272-3232

Our favourite among the area's traditional, round pizzas is from Napoli Pizza, at the foot of the East State Street hill in the Gateway building. Napoli's roots go back decades in downtown Ithaca, and they know how to make their pizza. Napoli also has by far the best wings in town, great cold or hot subs, and beer on tap if you're dining in or waiting for your pizza.

Rosalie's Cucina

841 West Genesee Street
Skaneateles, NY 13152
Phone: 315-685-2200

This bakery and Tuscan-themed Italian restaurant was opened in 1995 by Philip Romano, the restaurateur who's also responsible for the Macaroni Grill and Fuddrucker's chains. He built it for his ill sister, Rosalie, but she unfortunately passed away about a year after the restaurant opened. A meal here begins with freshly baked, hot Italian bread, with olive oil and a plate of oregano, grated cheese, hot pepper flakes, and minced garlic to mix into your oil as you see fit.

Sammy's Italian Buffet & Grill

720 South Meadow Street
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-256-7269

Perfect when you're in the mood for quantity. Where King Buffet used to be, Sammy's has all the fresh pizza you can eat, plus depending on when you're there, a variety of pasta dishes, salad bar, chicken parm, and more.

Souvlaki House

315 Eddy Street
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone:

If you're a fan of Greek food, you should never move to a town that has none. If you're in Ithaca, the options abound, and Souvlaki House represents the best combination of good food, reasonable prices, and good service. In fact, Souvlaki House offers both Greek food and Italian food, with the area's best souvlaki, Greek salad, and stuffed grape leaves, plus very good chicken (or veal or eggplant, etc.) parmigiana. Inexpensive lunch choices include subs, souvlaki and gyros, and Greek-style pizza. We recommend a bottle of Demestica, a Greek wine, with your meal.

Taverna Banfi

130 Statler Drive
Statler Hotel
Ithaca, NY 14853
Phone: 607-254-2565

On the second floor of the Statler Hotel on the Cornell campus, Taverna Banfi (formerly "Banfi's") is known for a solid lunch buffet, an exceptional and decadent Sunday brunch buffet, and a Tuscan-themed menu, with unrivaled views of campus. Much of the staff is from Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, learning how to operate a restaurant, but they're working with pros. For a casual visit, we love the simple tapas menu in the Banfi wine bar, set up nightly in the same room as the midday buffet.

4

ZaZa's Cucina

622 Cascadilla Street
Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607-273-9292

Since ZaZa's opened, we haven't heard anyone comment that they didn't like the food; at worst, people felt it was a bit pricey, or that the portions didn't match the prices. There's no question the experience is worth the price for a special occasion such as a birthday or friends visiting town, or just a relaxing mid-week treat. The food is very good, the presentation beautiful, and the service expert and attentive.
