Black Diamond Diner

Route 89 near Covert Cottages Road
Trumansburg, NY 14886

Pay a visit to the tiniest rail car diner ever -- a hot dog stand in a 70-year-old diesel engine. They serve hot dogs and white hots from Central New York's own Hofmann Sausages, and that's about it. Open seasonally, closing for the winter sometime in October, depending on weather.

Hazelnut Kitchen

53 East Main Street
Trumansburg, NY 14886
Phone: 607-387-4433

On Main Street in Trumansburg since 2007, Hazelnut Kitchen is one of the earliest and strongest proponents of the locavore, farm-to-table ethos that has become the signature cuisine of the Finger Lakes. They believe strongly in serving what's seasonal in Central New York, and the creative and beautiful preparations make for wonderful meals. The menu includes local beef and pork, fresh fish, and plenty of vegetarian options. Appetizers are mostly around $10, and main courses mostly $20 and up, but we don't know anyone who hasn't felt the occasional visit worth the splurge.

We're not going to lie, we're just tickled pink that the famous Rongo is reopening a few miles up the lake in Trumansburg. The history of this legendary eatery, pub, and music venue spans decades and multiple owners, and the level of anticipation as they get back off the ground is palpable.

Smok'n Bones Barbecue

3815 Main Street
Burdett, NY 14818
Phone: 607-546-7999

This rustic restaurant near where Route 79 bends in Burdett features slow-smoked BBQ such as pulled pork, brisket, and ribs, as well as chicken dishes, shrimp and fish fry, and even thin-crust pizzas. Limited vegetarian options include ricotta-stuffed eggplant and a chipotle pesto pizza with fresh tomatoes. Sandwiches start at about $7, and the generous steaks top out the menu at $18. We love the macaroni and cheese and the BBQ baked beans, and we're glad to see several local wines on the menu.
