Friendly's in Ithaca's southwest closing as chain absorbs 35 franchises

July 29, 2013

We hear that the Friendly's Restaurant on Elmira Road in Ithaca's southwest is closing this Wednesday, one of roughly eight franchises formerly owned by the Kessler Family, LLC, being closed this week. About a dozen other locations will remain open under corporate management, including the Friendly's at Cayuga Mall on North Triphammer Road.

While buying many of the franchisee's locations, Friendly's chose not to keep some of the under-performing stores open. One of three area locations, inside the Shops at Ithaca Mall, had already closed. That location was effectively right across the street from the Cayuga Mall restaurant.

Kessler Family, LLC, had actually considered buying all or part of the Friendly's Ice Cream corporation several years ago. The company also franchises a number of Burger King restaurants in Western and Central New York.
