Paving of Downtown Ithaca's Tuning Fork could snarl rush-hour traffic tonight

City Clerk Julie Holcomb announced this afternoon that the New York State Department of Transportation plans to stay into the evening tonight to pave half of the "Tuning Fork," the wrap-around intersection where Green Street, State Street, and Seneca Street come together in Downtown Ithaca's east end. The result is likely to be snarled traffic through rush hour and into the evening.

Closed block of East State Street will detour Route 79 May 7th-10th

East State Street at the eastern edge of the City of Ithaca, also known as New York State Route 79, will be closed for most of next week as the City of Ithaca's Water & Sewer Division installs water and sewer services for apartment buildings in the new Collegetown Terrace complex. Just one block, from Mitchell Street to Valentine Place, will be closed, but that will necessitate a detour for eastbound and westbound traffic on Route 79.

Severe thunderstorm knocks out power for thousands in Central New York

A severe thunderstorm that passed through Ithaca at about 8pm, pelting the area with marble-sized and grape-sized hailstones, has left a swath of Central New York without power. Much of downtown Ithaca is affected, with over 1,400 NYSEG customers in the City of Ithaca without power. 

Overall, Tompkins County has nearly 2,400 customers without power, and Schuyler and Chemung Counties have thousands more without power.

As the academic year wraps up at both Cornell University and Ithaca College, the local campuses have end-of-semester festivities planned for this Friday. Cornell's annual Slope Day includes food, drink, and music on the Libe Slope hillside, and Ithaca College students plan to Kick Back. Slope Day in particular will affect traffic patterns and TCAT routes around east hill.

Cornell Baseball win at Princeton gives Big Red division title, home turf for Ivy championship series

It's just the second time in program history Cornell Baseball has earned the Ivy League's Lou Gehrig Division championship outright, and the first time Cornell will host the Ivy League Championship Series. Sophomore Ben Swinford's solo home run in the 12th inning at Princeton gave the Big Red a 4-3 victory over the Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Princeton had won the first game 6-0, making game 2 of the day a do-or-die contest.
