This month we welcome the newest winery to the shores of Cayuga Lake. Shepherdess Cellars opened for business last week on Route 89 in Covert.

Anbinder. In the midst of Route 89's cluster of wineries (and distillery and cidery), Shepherdess offers a lovely new tasting and sales room with a boat-shaped tasting bar. Initially, the winery is open 11am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, but the owners say they'll be expanding the tasting room hours before long.
Owners Samantha and Mark Radloff say they'll be growing grapes for their wines on the property soon, but in the meantime, have sourced grapes from nearby vineyards such as Sheldrake Point Winery. They've been using facilities provided by Hector Wine Company to produce their own wines while working on getting their own building ready.
Initially, Shepherdess offers a Semi-Dry Riesling, Dry Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Gewurtztraminer and Cabernet Franc, especially, show a winemaking maturity that takes most wineries years to reach.
Shepherdess Cellars is at 8189 New York State Route 89, and they can be reached at 607-532-3437. A web site is in the works.
