Ithaca's Glenwood Pines for great view and family diningby Mark H. Anbinder
The $5 fried haddock sandwich and $11.50 fish fry dinner feature the best fried fish in town, starting with fresh haddock, fried in vegetable oil. Either way, you get a more-than-generous portion. There's lots of other seafood on the menu, such as fried farm-raised tilapia, scallops, or oysters, and grilled halibut or salmon, as well as steaks, spaghetti and meatballs, and salads. There's not really much in the way of vegetarian fare at the Glenwood Pines, besides the gardenburger. The Pines says they toss the meatballs in the spaghetti sauce when it's all cooked, but they can usually provide "virgin" spaghetti sauce, untouched by meat, upon request. Other than some side dishes and desserts, the gardenburger is really it for herbivores. Speaking of burgers, the Pinesburger is the restaurant's other claim to fame, and writing about it now makes me want one. It's a six-ounce cheeseburger on French bread, with lettuce, tomato, and onion, and either mayo or thousand island dressing. "Pinesburger, thousand!" is really all you need to say. Get some onion rings or fried mushrooms to go with it, though. The mushrooms also make a good appetizer, or have the soup of the day. Plan on 3-6 bucks for lunch and up to $20 for dinner. Draft beer is cheap, and there's a selection of Finger Lakes wines. The Pines is open from 11am until 10 on Sunday through Thursday, and until 11 on Friday and Saturday nights, and it's an economical place to bring the family. Check out glenwoodpines.com or call 273-3709 and tell them you heard about them here. |
