This week, we're visiting the Small Mall in Ithaca's Northeast for a bite at the Scale House Brewpub. The Scalehouse is attached to Northeast Pizza, adding a pub-style dining room with a snazzy bar. The pizzeria side used to be Rogan's Northeast, and if you go back even further, it was a Dominos franchise. Walk in today and you can still order a pizza or sub at the counter and sit down to enjoy it.
Now, with the pub side open, the pizza, calzones, salads, wings, and hot and cold subs are available whichever side you sit on, as well as the beers brewed in-house. There's nothing fancy here, just decent food at a reasonable price in a casual atmosphere.
Beers brewed in-house at the Scalehouse Brewpub.Appetizers tend toward the fried. Mozzarella sticks, onion rings, wings -- but there's a Scalehouse touch. The mushrooms, for example, are battered with their own red ale.
That red ale's one of the three beers on tap, and our favorite on the lineup, along with a light and quaffable pilsener and a hearty bock. Decent beer for a reasonable price, $4 a pint but often discounted for happy hour. There are also several commercial bottled beers, Sheldrake Point wines, and a selection of liquor for mixed drinks.
The bacon pizza at the Scalehouse. The jumbo pizzas are huge, and a good deal starting at $17 -- less with their occasional specials. In fact, keep an eye on those specials, like two pints of beer and a dozen wings for just ten bucks, anytime, or all-you-can-eat wings for $11 on Mondays.
Pasta dinners are $8-10 for spaghetti with sauce, plus meatballs, or chicken, eggplant, or veal parmesan, and they come with bread and butter and a decent tossed salad. These dinners are a mound of pasta, and if the chicken parm is really just some chicken tenders sprinkled with grated parmesan cheese, that's fine -- just remember we said there's nothing fancy here, and chances are you'll have leftovers for tomorrow's lunch.
Chicken parm sub with pepperoni and pepperoncini. Try it.Subs are $5.50 for a six-inch or $9 for twelve-inch, and feature the usual chicken parm, cheesesteak, or cheeseburger sub, or cold subs like roast beef, tuna, or even just cheese and veggies. We like the chicken parm with pepperoni and pepperoncini (mildly spicy banana peppers) added.
Plan on spending $5-15 per person on a meal, even less if you're doing wings and pizza for the family. Find the Scalehouse at 23 Cinema Drive behind Triphammer Marketplace and the Homewood Suites, or call 607-257-0107. Pick up a pizza on the way home, order from GrubHub, bring the kids, stop in for the game with wings and a beer, or even go for karaoke, and tell them you heard about them here. Nothing fancy, but it's worth a visit.
